Admision criteria

The evaluation of candidates is carried out taking three elements into account:

  • Academic records. Training in disciplines such as electrical and electronic engineering, energy efficiency, automotive technology, sensor technology, power electronics, or any other field in the area of engineering will be taken into account.
  • Additional qualifications and skills: foreign languages, work experience, etc.
  • Personal interview (carried out in case additional information is required).

On the basis of this information, a classification will be established in order to assess which candidates fulfil the admission criteria of the Master. In case the number of candidates exceeds the number of vacancies, this shortlist will set a ranking for the admission process.

In order to establish the admission criteria, it is worthy to mention that a division of the available vacancies can be done according to three different categories:

  1. Vacancies A: former students of the Polytechnic Engineering School of Gijón, graduated in Industrial Technical Engineering (specialized in Electricity or Electronics), and in the future, students of the Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Electronic, Industrial and Automated Engineering.
  2. Vacancies B: graduates from the University of Oviedo in any other degree / specialization.
  3. Vacancies C: graduates from other institutions (including universities from outside the EHEA).

Selection criteria for every category are shown below. Candidates are expected to provide official documents for every section.

Vacancies A

Criterion 1. Academic records (up to 20 points)

  • Average grade (up to 15 points).
  • In case the standards used to estimate the average grades in each subject is not the same for all the students (courses of the Erasmus programme, etc.), they will be standardized by dividing the average grade of the corresponding centre.
  • Free choice courses related to the contents of the Master (up to 2 points).
  • Degree final project that might be especially relevant in the context of the Master (up to 3 points).

Criterion 2. Other qualifications (up to 10 points)

Command of English: up to 5 points.

Knowledge of other languages of interest for scientific purposes: up to 2 points.

Work experience related to the Master: up to 3 points.

Criterion 3. Personal interview (up to 10 points)

Eventually, interviews will be conducted in order to evaluate the candidates (up to 10 points).

The selection process will try to include the same number of candidates with an electronic, electric and automated background, as these are the basis of power systems. This criterion should not close the doors to promising students, so the mentioned 50% percentage is not a must but a guideline in order to guarantee that there is not a clear imbalance.

Vacancies B

Criterion 1. Academic records (up to 20 points)

In case the standards used to estimate the average grades in each subject is not the same for all the students (courses of the Erasmus programme, etc.), they will be standardized by dividing them by the average grade of the corresponding centre.

The score for this criterion will result from the following expression:

N * T + L + P, where:

  • N is a value between 0 and 15 proportional to the average grade.
  • T is a value between 0 and 15 proportional to the average grade.:

    T = 1,0

    • Industrial Technical Engineering, specialization in Electricity, and Industrial Electricity and Automation (not included in Type A vacancies)

    T = 0,5

    • Other engineering areas that include relevant blocks in electricity and electronic and automation.
    • Graduates in Physics (specialization in Electronics).
    • The Grades and the Master degree from the former once the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) will be fully implemented.

    T = 0,0

    • Other degrees
  • L is a value between 0 and 2 and it measures the relationship of free-choice courses with the Master's Degree.
  • P is a value between 0 and 3, and it is assessed on the basis of the suitability of MA thesis and degree final projects with this Master.

Criterion 2. Other qualifications (up to 10 points)

Foreign languages (English): up to 5 points.

Knowledge of other languages of interest for scientific purposes: up to 2 points.

Work experience related to the Master: up to 3 points.

Criterion 3. Personal interview (up to 10 points)

Eventually, interviews will be conducted with the candidates in order to assess their application (up to 10 points).

Vacancies C

The procedure to follow in order to establish the classification for this category is the following:

  • Areas taken into account: mathematics, physics, electricity, electronics, micro-controllers, automated regulation, industrial engineering and computing.
  • The knowledge of the candidates on the previous areas will be compared to the required knowledge to face the Master in a successful way. On the basis of this comparison, candidates will receive a score between 0 (the specific area has not been studied) and 2 (the knowledge of the student equals or even exceeds the minimum). The labour experience of the applicants will be also taken into account in this stage.
  • Applicants will receive a score between 0 and 10 (being 10 the maximum score) for every course related to a particular area.
  • The score will be multiplied by the corresponding points established in section 2. The resulting values will be added and the final score is divided between the number of courses. The figure obtained in this process will be used as the criterion to establish the ranking, giving preference to those candidates with a higher score.
  • Foreign languages will be taken into account as an additional selection criterion.

The selection process of this Master will be carried out by the Executive Teaching Committee on the basis of the CV of the candidates. This committee will consist of a member of every branch of knowledge included in the Master.
